Diabetes can reduce sensation and circulation in your feet, so a small blister or cut can become serious before you feel it. A simple routine and regular checkups make a big difference.
Your daily routine
- Inspect your feet every day, including between the toes and the soles
- Wash and dry thoroughly, and moisturize dry skin (not between the toes)
- Wear clean, well-fitting shoes and never go barefoot
- Trim nails carefully, or have a podiatrist do it
Warning signs to act on
Redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, a wound that will not heal, or any change in color or sensation deserves prompt care. Early treatment prevents infections and complications.
