What Is Hammertoe?
Hammertoe is a deformity that causes one of the toe joints to bend abnormally, often resulting in the toe curling downward instead of lying flat. This condition commonly affects the smaller toes and may progressively worsen over time if left untreated.
As the deformity progresses, the affected toe may rub against footwear, leading to pain, redness, swelling, calluses, corns, and even open wounds on the top of the joint. Hammertoe can also interfere with walking, balance, and shoe comfort.
Hammertoe Treatment Options
At our New York foot clinic, we carefully evaluate the cause and severity of the hammertoe deformity to create a customized treatment plan tailored to your symptoms, lifestyle, and long-term foot health goals.
Conservative treatment often focuses on reducing pressure and irritation while improving alignment and comfort. Depending on the severity of the deformity, treatment may include padding, orthotics, shoe modifications, physical therapy, or surgery.
If the hammertoe becomes rigid, painful, or progressively worsens despite conservative care, minimally invasive surgery may be recommended to correct the deformity and restore proper toe alignment.
Mild hammertoe symptoms may improve with conservative treatment and supportive footwear changes. However, because hammertoes are often progressive, more advanced deformities may eventually require surgical correction for long-term relief.
Recovery time following surgery varies depending on the severity of the condition and the procedure performed, although minimally invasive techniques often result in reduced downtime and quicker healing compared to traditional surgery.
