Athlete's Foot Treatment in NYC

Medically reviewed by Dr. Farah Alani, DPM — board-certified foot & ankle surgeon

What Is Athlete's Foot?

Athlete's Foot is a common fungal infection of the skin that affects the feet, especially between the toes and along the soles. It is caused by fungi that thrive in warm, moist environments such as sweaty shoes, locker rooms, gyms, and public showers. The condition is highly contagious and can spread through direct contact or contaminated surfaces.

Athlete's Foot is typically characterized by itching, redness, peeling, dry flaky skin, and irritation. In more advanced cases, blisters, cracking, or ulcers may develop, causing discomfort and difficulty walking comfortably. Without proper treatment, the infection may worsen or spread to other areas of the foot or toenails.

Athlete's Foot Treatment Options

At the first sign of Athlete's Foot symptoms, patients are encouraged to keep their feet clean and dry while avoiding tight or moisture-trapping footwear. Early diagnosis and treatment are important to prevent the fungal infection from spreading or becoming more severe.

Depending on the severity of the infection, treatment may include medicated topical antifungal creams, sprays, powders, oral antifungal medications, foot hygiene recommendations, and preventative care to help reduce future flare-ups. Our goal is to provide fast symptom relief while completely eliminating the infection.

Proper evaluation is essential to confirm the presence of a fungal infection and determine the most effective treatment plan. During your visit, our foot doctors will examine the affected areas, review symptoms, and recommend the appropriate treatment based on the severity and duration of the condition.

In cases where topical medications are not fully effective or the infection has become widespread or persistent, oral antifungal medication may be prescribed to target the infection more aggressively and restore healthy skin.

Topical antifungal medications are highly effective at curing foot fungus. Wash the feet twice daily, dry very well, including between the toes and then apply the topical anti fungal medicine topical medication.

Treatment continues until all the layers of affected skin have sloughed off and for an additional couple of weeks to ensure the fungus is truly gone. If the topical medication is not effective, oral medication can be given.
