What Are Hallux Limitus & Hallux Rigidus?
Hallux Limitus and Hallux Rigidus are arthritic conditions affecting the big toe joint. These conditions develop when cartilage damage or abnormal bone growth limits the normal upward motion of the big toe. In Hallux Limitus, motion is reduced, while Hallux Rigidus involves more severe stiffness or complete loss of joint movement.
These conditions can make walking painful and difficult because the big toe plays an important role in balance and push-off during movement. Over time, arthritis and joint damage may worsen, leading to chronic pain, swelling, stiffness, and decreased mobility.
Hallux Limitus & Hallux Rigidus Treatment Options
At our New York foot clinic, we use advanced diagnostic tools and imaging technology to assess the severity of joint damage and determine the most effective treatment plan for your specific condition.
Conservative treatment may help slow arthritis progression, improve joint function, and reduce pain. Depending on the severity of the condition, treatment may include custom orthotics, supportive footwear, physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications, and activity modifications.
When arthritis becomes advanced and conservative treatment is no longer effective, surgery may be recommended to either improve joint movement or eliminate painful motion altogether.
Recovery depends on the severity of the arthritis and the type of treatment performed. Conservative treatment may provide long-term symptom management if the condition is diagnosed early.
Patients receiving joint implants are often able to walk in a protective boot shortly after surgery, while joint fusion procedures may require a longer healing period before full recovery is achieved. Physical therapy and gradual rehabilitation may also be recommended during recovery.
