An ankle sprain stretches or tears the ligaments that stabilize the joint, usually from a twist, roll, or awkward landing. Most sprains heal well with prompt care.
The RICE method
In the first days: Rest the ankle, Ice for swelling, Compress with a wrap, and Elevate above heart level. Avoid putting full weight on it until pain eases.
When it is more than a sprain
Get evaluated if you cannot bear weight, have severe swelling or bruising, notice deformity, or the ankle keeps giving way. Imaging rules out a fracture, and treating instability early prevents chronic, repeated sprains.
