Ingrown toenails happen when the nail edge grows into the skin, and a few simple habits prevent most of them.
Prevention basics
- Trim nails straight across, not curved, and not too short
- Wear shoes with enough room in the toe box
- Protect toes from repeated trauma in sports
- Keep feet clean and dry
When prevention is not enough
If a nail becomes painful, red, or infected, do not dig at it. A quick in-office procedure relieves the pressure and, when needed, prevents recurrence.
