An ingrown toenail happens when the nail edge grows into the surrounding skin, usually on the big toe. It can start as mild tenderness and progress to swelling, redness, and infection.
Try this first
Warm soaks and careful trimming may help a mild case. Avoid digging at the nail, and never attempt home surgery, especially if you have diabetes.
When to get it treated
See a podiatrist if the toe is painful, swollen, draining, or keeps coming back. A quick in-office procedure removes the ingrown portion and relieves the pressure, with most patients healing in about 10 to 14 days.
