  • 6 Pedicure Safety Tips You Must Follow For Optimal Foot Health

The warm summer months call for proper grooming of your feet, not only to keep them looking good, but also to ensure proper foot health. Whether you plan to pamper your feet at home or at the salon, here are some top tips from our NYC podiatrist on how to ensure a safe and effective pedicure.

While it’s true that pedicures can keep your feet looking great, especially during these warm summer months, did you know that this treatment can also give you incredible health benefits? Apart from aesthetic advantages, regular pedicures can help:

  • Prevent infections
  • Promote healthy circulation
  • Prevent pain, arthritis, and varicose veins
  • Improve nail health
  • Promote mental health

Today, pedicures are becoming a way of life for both women and men. However, they can have health risks, as well as benefits, so it’s always important to seek the advice of your podiatrist before having the treatment.

Top Pedicure Safety Tips from Our NYC Podiatrist

Regular pedicures are important for your foot health because not only do they keep your feet looking attractive, they will also moisturize your skin, keep your nails trimmed, and help control calluses. In addition, the massage will help relieve tension and stimulate circulation.

Whether you plan to pamper your feet at home or at the salon, here are some of the best pedicure safety tips from our NYC podiatrist:

  1. Bring your own pedicure utensils. Don’t be afraid to bring your own pedicure utensils and nail polish to the salon. It’s very easy for fungus and bacteria from another person to get into your nails and skin if the salon doesn’t follow the proper sterilization techniques, and by using your own equipment, you can avoid any unwanted infections.

  2. Soak your feet beforehand. If you are planning on using a pumice stone or an exfoliating scrub to remove any thick skin on the heel, ball, and sides of your feet, be sure to soak your feet beforehand to soften up any hardened skin as this will make the process easier and quicker!

  3. Don’t shave for at least 24 hours. Avoid shaving for at least 24 hours before your pedicure. This is because razors can create tiny tears in your skin, which will make it more vulnerable to infection.

  4. Always check the tub at the salon. One of the most important things you can do if you are getting a pedicure at a salon is to make sure it’s cleaned and disinfected in between each client. This is key to avoiding cross-contamination.

  5. Clip your nails correctly. Whether you are clipping your own toenails, or having them done by a nail specialist, make sure the nails are cut straight across and avoid curving at the corners.

  6. Do not cover up discolored nails. If you have discolored nails, do not apply nail polish! Why? This can make the discoloration worse because the polish will lock out moisture and won’t allow your nails to breathe. Thick or discolored toenails may indicate a fungal infection that requires medical treatment, so it’s important to talk to your podiatrist if you are suffering from this problem.
