Description

This includes a wide range of conditions that affect the bones, muscles and tendons of the legs and feet. Some conditions may be present at birth and some may develop later as the child grows. Examples of such conditions include flat feet, in-toeing, out-toeing and toe-walking.

Symptoms

Children may complain of pain and fatigue in their legs and feet. They may also exhibit limping, frequent falling and tripping. Another sign is an inability to keep up with their peers during physical activity, such as running.

Treatment Options

Children are not fully skeletally mature until their late teens. This means their feet are pliable and the majority of the foot deformities will respond well to braces and orthotics. If however, the condition is severe, then surgical intervention may be needed.

Treatment Options Description (with Duration)

Orthotic devices can be used to maintain proper foot support and help realign joints. They also help to distribute body weight evenly. Children outgrow orthotics quickly as their feet constantly change throughout their pre-teen and teen years. As such, they must be refitted as the child gets older.

Expected Outcome

The goal of treatment is to help realign the bones in the child's feet and/or eliminate the causing force of the deformity, both of which would lead to relief of pain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answer: Yes. Lack of a complaint is not a reliable sign. In growing feet, bones are flexible and can be distorted without causing pain.
Answer: Observe his/her walking. If you notice any of the following, then it's time to have the child examined by a podiatrist: the toes are pointing in or out, child is toe-walking, knees are constantly rubbing against each other throughout the walking cycle.
Answer: Custom orthotics are inserts that are placed into shoes that keeps the bone in the feet in proper alignment. Many childhood foot conditions can be helped with orthotics. They do not weaken the foot and in fact, do the complete opposite. Orthotics will eliminate the child's foot pain and allow normal development as the child matures.
