Description

A foot infection is a general way of saying that there is bacteria, fungus, or a virus that has invaded your foot and is causing problems. 

Symptoms

Swelling, redness, skin is hot to the touch, pus maybe present. A foot infection can involve the whole foot or be limited to a particular pocket of infecttion. If the infection is left too long it can invade the bone or your bloodstream. This can result in amputation or death. Foot infections can be very serious so please seek treatment right away.

Medication both orally and on your foot, sometimes cleaning out the infection in the operating room is necessary if the infection is left too long.

Very dependent upon the situation. A simple infection may only need topical or oral medications. Some may require IV antibiotics in the hospital. In the event of a severe infection hospitalization, surgery, and IV medication will be needed as well as specialized wound dressings and after-care in a special facility or by a certified home health aide.
