Pump Bump/Haglund's Deformity

Haglund's Deformity (Pump Bump) can cause heel pain and swelling. If your condition is affecting the quality of your life, our highly specialized NYC foot doctors are able to recommend tailored treatment options, including custom orthotics and shoe-gear modification, to take away pressure from the bump and alleviate any undesirable symptoms, getting you back to healthy and happy living.

Description

This is a bump at the back of the heel. Sometimes it's referred to as a "pump bump" because it is caused by the back of the shoe rubbing on the heel. The back of your heel bone responds to this pressure by becoming bigger.

Symptoms

Symptoms include visible bump at the back of the heel, pain, swelling, pain when the back of the shoe rubs on the bump.

Treatment Options

Shoe modification, NSAIDs, icing, orthotics, and minimally invasive surgery.

Treatment Option Description (with Duration)

Treatment involves removing pressure from the bump. One way to do that is by avoiding shoes that rub on the back of your heel bone. If the heel is swollen, taking an over-the-counter pain killer and icing the area can help bring down the pain and swelling. Custom orthotics and heel lifts can be used to help take away pressure from the painful area. Surgery may be required if your pain does not go away. Your podiatrist may recommend a minimally invasive procedure like Tenex where a tiny incision is made for a probe to enter over the bump. High-powered, ultrasonic energy is then used to eliminate the bump.

Expected Outcome

Non-surgical treatments are sometimes enough to diminish pain and keep you comfortable. If your pain continues, surgery would be the next step for a more permanent solution.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Any shoe that is too tight can cause friction at the back of your heel. This can cause your bump to become painful.

There is a small fluid-filled sac called a bursa between your heel bone and the Achilles tendon. If there is a lot of pressure on that bursa, it can become inflamed and you will notice swelling behind the heel.

Absolutely. Sometimes, you can have a tight heel cord (Achilles tendon). Doing calf stretches will ease tension on the Achilles tendon, which can lessen tension on the bump.

Haglund's deformities, Pump Bumps, or back-of-heel spurs can be shaved down with a small incision and an instrument called Tenex. With an incision the size of a dime, we can access the bump and shave it down with ultrasonic energy.  This eliminates the need for blades or saws to remove this bump as was traditionally required.
