Blisters are pockets of raised skin filled with fluid that typically develop as a result of excessive rubbing, friction, pressure, or irritation. They commonly occur on the feet due to tight shoes, prolonged walking, sports activities, or repetitive motion. Blisters form as the bodyβs natural protective response to shield the underlying skin from further damage.
Although most blisters are harmless and heal on their own, some can become painful, swollen, or infected if not treated properly. In certain cases, blisters may also develop due to infections, allergic reactions, burns, or underlying skin conditions. Proper care and treatment are important to relieve discomfort and reduce the risk of complications.
At the first sign of a blister, patients are encouraged to protect the affected area and avoid additional friction or pressure. In many cases, leaving the blister intact helps protect the sensitive skin underneath and supports natural healing. Covering the blister with a bandage or protective dressing can help reduce irritation and prevent infection.
Depending on the size, location, and severity of the blister, treatment may include protective padding, blister drainage, antibacterial ointments, wound care, and recommendations for proper footwear or activity modification. Our goal is to relieve pain, promote healing, and help prevent future blister formation.
Proper evaluation is important, especially for large, painful, recurrent, or infected blisters. During your visit, our foot doctors will examine the blister and determine whether medical drainage or additional treatment is necessary to support safe healing and avoid complications.
In cases where the blister becomes infected or is associated with another skin condition, additional treatment may be recommended to eliminate infection and restore healthy skin.

Most blisters heal best when protected with a clean bandage or padded dressing. Keeping the blister covered helps reduce friction, relieve discomfort, and protect the skin from infection while healing occurs naturally.
For large or painful blisters, your foot doctor may carefully drain the fluid using sterile techniques while preserving the protective outer skin whenever possible. This helps reduce pressure and discomfort while minimizing infection risk.
After drainage or if the skin becomes irritated, antibacterial ointments may be applied to help prevent infection and promote healthy healing. Patients are also given instructions on how to properly care for the affected area at home.
Improper footwear and repetitive friction are common causes of blisters. Patients may receive guidance on shoe modifications, cushioned insoles, moisture control, and protective products to reduce pressure and prevent future blisters.
Most blisters begin healing within a few days once the underlying source of friction or irritation is removed. Larger blisters or those requiring drainage may take slightly longer to heal depending on the severity and location. Keeping the area clean, protected, and dry is important throughout the recovery process.
With proper care and treatment, most blisters heal completely without complications. However, popping or improperly treating a blister can increase the risk of infection, delayed healing, and additional skin irritation.

Sometimes scar tissue builds up in a tendon and causes the tendon to lose its elasticity. At that point, chronic Achilles tendinitis can be treated by removing the scar tissue using a minimally invasive procedure like Tenex. This uses a wand that transmits ultrasonic energy to break through the scar tissue leaving healthy tissue behind. Downtime is minimal and return to normal activity is about a week.
Grab a resistance band (or even a stretchy t-shirt)! Place the band or shirt around the ball of your foot. Pull the two ends of the band or shirt towards you until you feel a nice stretch in the back of your leg. Hold this stretch for 30 seconds, and relax for 10 seconds. Repeat this 5-10 times for both legs!
Achilles tendonitis rarely requires surgery. However, if treatment is delayed or neglected, there could be further damage such as a tendon tear. This would require surgical repair, and although we can do this with minimally invasive techniques, it is better to prevent damage when possible. Don’t ignore your pain. See your podiatrist as soon as possible.
