Cryosurgery for Morton’s Neuroma

Morton’s Neuroma is a painful condition caused by the thickening or enlargement of nerve tissue, usually located between the toes. Patients often describe the sensation as walking on a pebble or experiencing burning, tingling, or electric-like pain in the ball of the foot.
Symptoms of Morton’s Neuroma

If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, cryosurgery for Morton’s Neuroma may be the right solution for you.

Burning or Tingling Pain

Sharp, burning, or tingling sensations in the ball of the foot or toes.

Electric Shock Sensations

Sudden shooting or electric-like pain while walking or standing.

Feeling of Walking on a Pebble

The sensation that there is a pebble, fold in the sock, or lump underneath the foot.

What is Cryosurgery for Morton’s Neuroma?

Cryosurgery, also known as cryoneuroablation, is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat painful nerve tissue associated with Morton’s Neuroma. During the procedure, the affected nerve is treated with controlled freezing temperatures to stop pain signals without requiring large incisions or extensive surgery.

The neuroma is treated with several pulses of cryoablation, with a total freeze time of approximately 9–12 minutes and a total procedure time of about 25–30 minutes. Sedation anesthesia is optional, and patients are typically able to walk immediately after treatment.

Benefits of Cryosurgery for Morton’s Neuroma

Compared to traditional surgery, cryosurgery offers patients a minimally invasive alternative with faster recovery and less downtime.

Immediate Walking After Treatment

Most patients are able to walk immediately following the procedure.

Faster Recovery Time

Patients often return to normal activities within 5–7 days.

Minimally Invasive Procedure

No large incisions are required, minimizing tissue damage and scarring.

Reduced Risk of Recurrence

Cryoneuroablation may reduce the risk of complications such as stump neuroma associated with surgical excision.

Cryosurgery for Morton’s Neuroma Expected Outcomes

Most patients experience significant pain relief within 3–5 days after treatment, with improved comfort while walking and standing. The goal of cryosurgery is to eliminate nerve pain and help patients return to normal daily activities quickly and comfortably.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sometimes scar tissue builds up in a tendon and causes the tendon to lose its elasticity. At that point, chronic Achilles tendinitis can be treated by removing the scar tissue using a minimally invasive procedure like Tenex. This uses a wand that transmits ultrasonic energy to break through the scar tissue leaving healthy tissue behind. Downtime is minimal and return to normal activity is about a week.

Warm-up before and cool down after your workout routine. Slowly increase the intensity of your exercise over a period of time. If you’re using equipment at the gym, make sure you know how to use it safely and also with the form and posture. If unsure, always ask!

Grab a resistance band (or even a stretchy t-shirt)! Place the band or shirt around the ball of your foot. Pull the two ends of the band or shirt towards you until you feel a nice stretch in the back of your leg. Hold this stretch for 30 seconds, and relax for 10 seconds. Repeat this 5-10 times for both legs!

Achilles tendonitis rarely requires surgery. However, if treatment is delayed or neglected, there could be further damage such as a tendon tear. This would require surgical repair, and although we can do this with minimally invasive techniques, it is better to prevent damage when possible. Don’t ignore your pain.
