What Are Pediatric Foot Conditions?

Pediatric foot conditions include a wide range of disorders affecting the bones, muscles, tendons, joints, and soft tissues of the feet and legs in children and adolescents. Some conditions are present at birth, while others develop gradually as a child grows and becomes more active.

Common pediatric foot conditions include flat feet, in-toeing, out-toeing, toe-walking, gait abnormalities, and structural deformities. Because children’s feet are still developing, early diagnosis and treatment are important to help guide proper growth and prevent future complications.

Children with foot and ankle conditions may experience pain, fatigue, balance problems, difficulty participating in sports, or trouble keeping up with their peers during physical activities.

Pediatric Foot & Ankle Treatment Options

At our New York foot clinic, we perform comprehensive evaluations using advanced diagnostic technology to assess foot structure, walking patterns, growth development, and overall lower extremity function.

Because children’s bones and joints are still developing, many pediatric foot conditions respond extremely well to conservative treatment. Customized treatment plans may include orthotics, braces, supportive footwear, stretching programs, activity modifications, and physical therapy to help improve alignment and reduce stress on growing structures.

For severe deformities or conditions that do not improve with conservative treatment, surgical correction may occasionally be recommended to restore proper function and alignment.

The primary goal of treatment is to improve foot alignment, eliminate painful stress on developing structures, and support healthy growth and mobility. With early diagnosis and proper care, many children experience significant improvement in pain, walking ability, balance, and overall activity levels.

Customized treatment plans can help children remain active, comfortable, and confident throughout their growth and development.

TREATMENT OPTIONS
Custom Orthotics

Orthotic devices help support proper foot alignment, distribute pressure evenly, improve walking mechanics, and reduce pain associated with developing foot deformities.

Bracing & Supportive Devices

Braces and supportive devices may help guide proper alignment and improve stability while a child’s feet continue to grow and develop.

Physical Therapy & Stretching

Therapy programs may help strengthen muscles, improve flexibility, correct gait abnormalities, and enhance overall balance and coordination.

Footwear Recommendations

Supportive and properly fitted shoes play an important role in improving comfort, stability, and healthy foot development in children and teens.

Treatment Duration & Recovery

Because children continue to grow rapidly throughout childhood and adolescence, treatment plans may need periodic adjustments over time. Orthotics and braces may require replacement or refitting as the child grows.

Many pediatric conditions improve significantly with consistent conservative treatment and early intervention. Recovery following surgery varies depending on the severity of the condition and the procedure performed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sometimes scar tissue builds up in a tendon and causes the tendon to lose its elasticity. At that point, chronic Achilles tendinitis can be treated by removing the scar tissue using a minimally invasive procedure like Tenex. This uses a wand that transmits ultrasonic energy to break through the scar tissue leaving healthy tissue behind. Downtime is minimal and return to normal activity is about a week.

Warm-up before and cool down after your workout routine. Slowly increase the intensity of your exercise over a period of time. If you’re using equipment at the gym, make sure you know how to use it safely and also with the form and posture. If unsure, always ask!

Grab a resistance band (or even a stretchy t-shirt)! Place the band or shirt around the ball of your foot. Pull the two ends of the band or shirt towards you until you feel a nice stretch in the back of your leg. Hold this stretch for 30 seconds, and relax for 10 seconds. Repeat this 5-10 times for both legs!

Achilles tendonitis rarely requires surgery. However, if treatment is delayed or neglected, there could be further damage such as a tendon tear. This would require surgical repair, and although we can do this with minimally invasive techniques, it is better to prevent damage when possible. Don’t ignore your pain. See your podiatrist as soon as possible.
