Dr.Artis was so amazing. After going to two other podiatrists who gave me no support or hope, Dr. artis made me feel like there can be change for me. She was so patient, kind and informative. I’m actually excited to go back and get my results.
The foot is uniquely vulnerable to infection following cuts, lacerations, puncture wounds, and abrasions more so than almost any other part of the body. Reduced arterial circulation relative to the upper extremities impairs immune cell delivery and tissue oxygenation. Constant contact with floors, soil, footwear, and surfaces exposes any skin break to high bacterial loads. The mechanical forces of weight-bearing stretch and disrupt wound edges with every step, preventing the skin from closing and healing naturally. And in patients with diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, or immunosuppression, these normal vulnerabilities are dramatically amplified. At Healthy Feet NYC, we treat infected foot wounds of every type from minor punctures and lacerations to complex chronic wounds with the precision, urgency, and follow-through they require.
A foot infection from a cut or wound develops when bacteria colonize a break in the skin surface before the body’s local immune defenses can mount an effective containment response. The most common pathogens depend on the mechanism of injury: Staphylococcus aureus (including community-acquired MRSA) and Streptococcus species dominate most wound infections; puncture wounds through the sole of a shoe introduce Pseudomonas aeruginosa as a significant concern; wounds contaminated with soil or organic material may harbor gram-negative rods or anaerobes. Clinical signs of infection include progressive redness and warmth around the wound, swelling out of proportion to the injury, pain that is worsening rather than improving, purulent or malodorous drainage, and in more advanced cases, fever and lymph node swelling. At Healthy Feet NYC, we evaluate infected foot wounds with wound cultures, imaging when foreign body retention is suspected, and depth assessment to determine the extent of tissue involvement before treatment, not after.

Treatment of a foot infection from a cut or wound is calibrated precisely to the depth, severity, and microbiology of the infection. Superficial wound infections limited to the skin and immediate subcutaneous tissue are typically managed with thorough irrigation, debridement of non-viable tissue, appropriate moist wound dressings, and targeted oral antibiotics based on clinical presentation and culture results. Deeper infections involving subcutaneous fat, fascia, or tendon sheath require more aggressive in-office debridement, consideration of drainage procedures, and broader systemic antibiotic coverage pending culture guidance. Our podiatrists also perform ultrasound and plain film imaging to identify retained foreign bodies glass, metal, splinters, gravel that are a frequently overlooked driver of non-resolving wound infections, and we remove them in-office whenever safely feasible under local anesthesia.
