A splinter or foreign body injury occurs when a small object such as wood, metal, glass, plastic, or another sharp material becomes embedded in the skin of the foot. These injuries commonly occur after stepping on objects barefoot or through thin footwear.
Even small foreign objects can cause significant pain, inflammation, and discomfort when walking. If left untreated, the object may migrate deeper into the tissue or lead to infection, abscess formation, or more serious complications.
Prompt evaluation and removal are important to help prevent worsening pain and infection.
At our New York foot clinic, we carefully evaluate the location and depth of the foreign body using advanced diagnostic techniques when necessary. Treatment is designed to safely remove the object while minimizing discomfort and reducing the risk of infection.
Small superficial splinters may occasionally be removed at home, but larger, deeper, or painful foreign bodies should be professionally treated to avoid tissue damage and complications.
Our doctors can safely numb the area, remove the object, clean the wound thoroughly, and provide wound care instructions to support rapid healing.

When treated early, splinters and foreign body injuries can usually be removed quickly and safely with minimal complications. Prompt treatment greatly reduces the risk of infection, deeper tissue involvement, and prolonged pain.

Most patients experience rapid relief and are able to return to normal walking and daily activities shortly after treatment.
For deeply embedded or painful splinters, the affected area is typically numbed before the object is carefully removed using sterile instruments.
After removal, the wound is cleaned and treated with antibacterial ointment. Depending on the severity of the injury, the area may be covered with a dressing or bandage to promote healing and reduce infection risk.
If signs of infection are present β including redness, warmth, swelling, or pus β oral or topical antibiotics may be prescribed to help eliminate the infection.
Patients may receive follow-up evaluations to ensure proper healing and confirm that no fragments remain embedded in the foot.
Most minor foreign body injuries heal within several days after removal and proper wound care. Patients are advised to keep the area clean, dry, and protected during healing.
More severe wounds or infected injuries may require additional treatment time, antibiotics, or ongoing wound care management depending on the extent of the injury.

Sometimes scar tissue builds up in a tendon and causes the tendon to lose its elasticity. At that point, chronic Achilles tendinitis can be treated by removing the scar tissue using a minimally invasive procedure like Tenex. This uses a wand that transmits ultrasonic energy to break through the scar tissue leaving healthy tissue behind. Downtime is minimal and return to normal activity is about a week.
Grab a resistance band (or even a stretchy t-shirt)! Place the band or shirt around the ball of your foot. Pull the two ends of the band or shirt towards you until you feel a nice stretch in the back of your leg. Hold this stretch for 30 seconds, and relax for 10 seconds. Repeat this 5-10 times for both legs!
Achilles tendonitis rarely requires surgery. However, if treatment is delayed or neglected, there could be further damage such as a tendon tear. This would require surgical repair, and although we can do this with minimally invasive techniques, it is better to prevent damage when possible. Don’t ignore your pain. See your podiatrist as soon as possible.
