What Are Hallux Limitus & Hallux Rigidus?

Hallux Limitus and Hallux Rigidus are arthritic conditions affecting the big toe joint. These conditions develop when cartilage damage or abnormal bone growth limits the normal upward motion of the big toe. In Hallux Limitus, motion is reduced, while Hallux Rigidus involves more severe stiffness or complete loss of joint movement.

These conditions can make walking painful and difficult because the big toe plays an important role in balance and push-off during movement. Over time, arthritis and joint damage may worsen, leading to chronic pain, swelling, stiffness, and decreased mobility.

Hallux Limitus & Hallux Rigidus Treatment Options

At our New York foot clinic, we use advanced diagnostic tools and imaging technology to assess the severity of joint damage and determine the most effective treatment plan for your specific condition.

Conservative treatment may help slow arthritis progression, improve joint function, and reduce pain. Depending on the severity of the condition, treatment may include custom orthotics, supportive footwear, physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications, and activity modifications.

When arthritis becomes advanced and conservative treatment is no longer effective, surgery may be recommended to either improve joint movement or eliminate painful motion altogether.

When diagnosed early, Hallux Limitus and Hallux Rigidus can often be managed successfully with conservative treatment to slow arthritis progression and reduce pain.

For patients requiring surgery, the goals are to restore comfortable movement or eliminate painful joint motion entirely, leading to significant improvement in mobility, stability, and quality of life. Most patients experience substantial pain relief and improved daily function following treatment.

TREATMENT OPTIONS
Supportive Footwear & Shoe Modifications

Shoes with stiff soles and a roomy toe box may help reduce pressure on the big toe joint and improve walking comfort.

Custom Orthotics & Morton’s Extension

Custom orthotics with a Morton’s extension help support the foot, reduce joint strain, and limit painful motion during walking activities.

Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation

Physical therapy may help improve flexibility, strengthen surrounding structures, and maintain joint mobility while reducing pain and inflammation.

Anti-Inflammatory Medication & Pain Relief

NSAIDs, icing, and activity modifications may help relieve inflammation, swelling, and discomfort associated with arthritic joint damage.

Treatment Duration & Recovery

Recovery depends on the severity of the arthritis and the type of treatment performed. Conservative treatment may provide long-term symptom management if the condition is diagnosed early.

Patients receiving joint implants are often able to walk in a protective boot shortly after surgery, while joint fusion procedures may require a longer healing period before full recovery is achieved. Physical therapy and gradual rehabilitation may also be recommended during recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sometimes scar tissue builds up in a tendon and causes the tendon to lose its elasticity. At that point, chronic Achilles tendinitis can be treated by removing the scar tissue using a minimally invasive procedure like Tenex. This uses a wand that transmits ultrasonic energy to break through the scar tissue leaving healthy tissue behind. Downtime is minimal and return to normal activity is about a week.

Warm-up before and cool down after your workout routine. Slowly increase the intensity of your exercise over a period of time. If you’re using equipment at the gym, make sure you know how to use it safely and also with the form and posture. If unsure, always ask!

Grab a resistance band (or even a stretchy t-shirt)! Place the band or shirt around the ball of your foot. Pull the two ends of the band or shirt towards you until you feel a nice stretch in the back of your leg. Hold this stretch for 30 seconds, and relax for 10 seconds. Repeat this 5-10 times for both legs!

Achilles tendonitis rarely requires surgery. However, if treatment is delayed or neglected, there could be further damage such as a tendon tear. This would require surgical repair, and although we can do this with minimally invasive techniques, it is better to prevent damage when possible. Don’t ignore your pain. See your podiatrist as soon as possible.
