A foot infection occurs when bacteria, fungi, or viruses invade the skin or deeper tissues of the foot, causing inflammation, pain, and tissue damage. Infections may begin from cuts, wounds, blisters, ingrown toenails, ulcers, fungal conditions, or other injuries that allow harmful organisms to enter the body.
Foot infections can range from mild skin irritation to serious medical conditions that spread into deeper tissues, bones, or even the bloodstream if left untreated. Prompt diagnosis and medical care are extremely important, especially for patients with diabetes, poor circulation, weakened immune systems, or chronic wounds.
Symptoms commonly include swelling, redness, warmth, tenderness, drainage, pus, and pain while walking. In severe cases, infections may become life-threatening and require emergency medical care.
At our New York foot clinic, we provide rapid evaluation and customized treatment plans based on the type, severity, and location of the infection. Early treatment focuses on controlling the infection, reducing inflammation, protecting healthy tissue, and restoring normal foot function.
Depending on the severity of the infection, treatment may include topical medications, oral antibiotics or antifungal medications, wound care, drainage procedures, specialized dressings, or surgical cleaning of infected tissue. More serious infections may require hospitalization, IV antibiotics, and advanced wound management.
Our goal is to stop the infection as quickly as possible while minimizing complications and preserving healthy tissue and mobility.

With early diagnosis and proper treatment, most foot infections can be successfully resolved before causing serious long-term complications. Patients can typically expect reduced pain, improved healing, and restoration of healthy tissue and foot function.

However, untreated infections can spread into deeper tissues, bones, or the bloodstream, potentially leading to severe complications including chronic wounds, amputation, or life-threatening illness. Prompt medical attention is essential for any signs of infection.
Mild infections may be treated using topical creams, ointments, or oral medications designed to eliminate bacteria, fungi, or viruses while reducing inflammation and discomfort.
Proper wound care is essential for healing and infection control. Specialized dressings may be used to protect the area, absorb drainage, and create an optimal healing environment.
Infections involving abscesses, deep tissue involvement, or significant tissue damage may require drainage or surgical cleaning procedures to remove infected tissue and reduce the spread of infection.
Severe infections may require hospitalization and intravenous antibiotics to aggressively treat the infection and prevent it from spreading into the bone or bloodstream.
Recovery time depends heavily on the severity and type of infection. Mild infections may improve within days or weeks using medications and proper wound care, while more severe infections can require extended treatment involving hospitalization, surgery, or rehabilitation.
Patients are encouraged to closely follow their treatment plan, keep the affected area clean and protected, and attend all follow-up appointments to reduce the risk of recurrence or complications.

Sometimes scar tissue builds up in a tendon and causes the tendon to lose its elasticity. At that point, chronic Achilles tendinitis can be treated by removing the scar tissue using a minimally invasive procedure like Tenex. This uses a wand that transmits ultrasonic energy to break through the scar tissue leaving healthy tissue behind. Downtime is minimal and return to normal activity is about a week.
Grab a resistance band (or even a stretchy t-shirt)! Place the band or shirt around the ball of your foot. Pull the two ends of the band or shirt towards you until you feel a nice stretch in the back of your leg. Hold this stretch for 30 seconds, and relax for 10 seconds. Repeat this 5-10 times for both legs!
Achilles tendonitis rarely requires surgery. However, if treatment is delayed or neglected, there could be further damage such as a tendon tear. This would require surgical repair, and although we can do this with minimally invasive techniques, it is better to prevent damage when possible. Don’t ignore your pain. See your podiatrist as soon as possible.
