Dr.Artis was so amazing. After going to two other podiatrists who gave me no support or hope, Dr. artis made me feel like there can be change for me. She was so patient, kind and informative. I’m actually excited to go back and get my results.
The internet is full of athlete’s foot home remedy advice — tea tree oil, apple cider vinegar, garlic paste, hydrogen peroxide soaks — and while some of these have modest supporting evidence, none replaces clinically proven antifungal therapy for established infections. What does work at home, for very early or mild tinea pedis, includes: OTC terbinafine 1% cream applied correctly and consistently for the full two-week course; keeping feet thoroughly dry — particularly between toes — after every washing, as moisture is the primary factor allowing fungal growth; using moisture-wicking socks changed daily; rotating footwear to allow complete drying between wears; and applying antifungal powder inside shoes daily. Tea tree oil (melaleuca) has demonstrated in vitro antifungal activity in laboratory studies and may provide supplemental benefit alongside proven antifungals, but clinical evidence for its use as a standalone treatment is insufficient to recommend it as a primary therapy. At Healthy Feet Podiatry, we give our NYC patients an honest, evidence-based evaluation of every home remedy — without dismissing patient preference or practical realities.
Home remedies that have no meaningful clinical evidence despite widespread online promotion include bleach foot soaks, undiluted apple cider vinegar applications, Listerine soaks, and baking soda paste — some of which can cause significant skin irritation and worsen the skin barrier breakdown already caused by the fungal infection. The most effective home-based approach combines a proven OTC antifungal with strict moisture control and environmental decontamination of footwear — a protocol that clears mild infections reliably when followed consistently. When athlete’s foot is not improving after two weeks of correct OTC treatment, involves blistering, weeping, or painful cracks, has spread beyond the toes to the sole or instep, or is recurring despite treatment, it has outgrown the home remedy stage. At Healthy Feet Podiatry, we see these cases daily and provide the prescription-level care that takes over where home treatment appropriately leaves off.

Healthy Feet Podiatry’s NYC podiatrists respect that most patients want to try home treatment first — and we support that instinct with honest, practical guidance on what the evidence actually says works. But we’re also here for the moment home treatment stops being enough. If your athlete’s foot is persistent, worsening, or recurring despite your best efforts, a same-week appointment at any of our Manhattan locations will give you the prescription-strength treatment and clinical guidance that moves you from managing symptoms to actually clearing the infection. We accept most major insurance plans for podiatric dermatology and skin infection consultations, and our podiatrists communicate in plain language — no jargon, no judgment, just clear answers and effective treatment. When the home remedies have done what they can, Healthy Feet Podiatry is the logical next step.
