Hammertoe

Hammertoe is diagnosed as an abnormal bend in one of the joints of the toe. Our Wall Street, Grand Central, Upper East Side and Times Square Manhattan foot doctors offer comprehensive minimally invasive surgery and microsurgery options for your conditions. During a one-on-one consultation, our team can help determine which option is best suited for your specific case, lifestyle, and budget.
Symptoms of Hammertoe

If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, minimally invasive hammertoe surgery may be the right solution for you.

Toe Pain & Irritation

Pain or discomfort in the affected toe, especially when walking, standing, or wearing shoes.

Swelling & Redness

Inflammation, redness, tenderness, or irritation around the toe joint caused by pressure and friction.

Corns, Calluses & Wounds

The formation of corns, calluses, or sores on the top of the toe due to rubbing against footwear.

What is Hammertoe Minimally Invasive Surgery?

Minimally invasive hammertoe surgery, also known as microsurgery, is a procedure performed to straighten the affected toe while minimizing trauma to surrounding tissues. Through tiny entry points, specialized instruments are used to release tight soft tissues or reshape the bone responsible for the deformity.

In some cases, a quick release of the soft tissue structures may be all that is needed to correct the hammertoe. In others, the bone at the toe joint may be carefully remodeled to restore proper alignment.

The procedure is completed in-office with sedation and typically takes less than 30 minutes. Because of the minimally invasive approach, patients are often able to walk out shortly after treatment with significantly less downtime compared to traditional open surgery.

Benefits of Hammertoe Minimally Invasive Surgery

Compared to traditional hammertoe surgery, minimally invasive procedures provide patients with a more comfortable recovery experience.

Smaller Incisions

Tiny entry points minimize tissue damage, reduce scarring, and support faster healing.

Faster Recovery

Patients typically recover more quickly and return to daily activities sooner than with open surgery.

Reduced Post-Operative Pain

Minimally invasive techniques help decrease swelling, discomfort, and recovery-related pain.

Improved Toe Alignment

The procedure helps straighten the toe, relieve pressure, and restore more natural foot function.

Hammertoe Minimally Invasive Surgery Treatment Options

When conservative care for hammertoes is not enough, and orthotics, wider shoes and padding do not relieve foot pain, it may be time to consider hammertoe surgery.

Minimally invasive surgery, also known as microsurgery, is a simple solution to address the pain of hammertoe. Sometimes a very quick release of the soft tissue structures in the toe (may take as little as 30 seconds) is all that is needed to straighten the hammertoe.

In some cases, another correction is used to reshape the bone at the toe joint. Using minimally invasive techniques, a small entry point is made at the side of your toe and a thin instrument is used to remodel the bone and straighten the toe.

This procedure is completed in-office with sedation and usually takes less than 30 minutes. You will be able to walk out of the office shortly after the treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sometimes scar tissue builds up in a tendon and causes the tendon to lose its elasticity. At that point, chronic Achilles tendinitis can be treated by removing the scar tissue using a minimally invasive procedure like Tenex. This uses a wand that transmits ultrasonic energy to break through the scar tissue leaving healthy tissue behind. Downtime is minimal and return to normal activity is about a week.

Warm-up before and cool down after your workout routine. Slowly increase the intensity of your exercise over a period of time. If you’re using equipment at the gym, make sure you know how to use it safely and also with the form and posture. If unsure, always ask!

Grab a resistance band (or even a stretchy t-shirt)! Place the band or shirt around the ball of your foot. Pull the two ends of the band or shirt towards you until you feel a nice stretch in the back of your leg. Hold this stretch for 30 seconds, and relax for 10 seconds. Repeat this 5-10 times for both legs!

Achilles tendonitis rarely requires surgery. However, if treatment is delayed or neglected, there could be further damage such as a tendon tear. This would require surgical repair, and although we can do this with minimally invasive techniques, it is better to prevent damage when possible. Don’t ignore your pain. See your podiatrist as soon as possible.
