What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar Fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain and occurs when the plantar fascia β€” a thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot β€” becomes inflamed and irritated. This structure supports the arch of the foot and absorbs stress during walking and standing.

Excessive strain, overuse, poor foot mechanics, prolonged standing, or improper footwear can cause small tears and inflammation within the plantar fascia, leading to chronic heel pain. Patients often experience the most severe pain during their first steps in the morning or after sitting for extended periods.

Without proper treatment, Plantar Fasciitis can progressively worsen and significantly interfere with walking, exercise, and daily activities.

Plantar Fasciitis Treatment Options

At our New York foot clinic, we use advanced diagnostic technology to evaluate the severity of your condition, identify contributing biomechanical factors, and create a fully customized treatment plan tailored to your lifestyle, activity level, and footwear needs.

Conservative treatment is highly effective for most patients and focuses on reducing inflammation, stretching tight tissues, improving foot support, and correcting abnormal walking mechanics. Treatment options may include stretching programs, splinting, physical therapy, orthotics, injections, and supportive footwear recommendations.

For chronic or severe cases that do not improve with conservative care, minimally invasive surgical techniques may be recommended to provide lasting pain relief with reduced recovery time.

Although Plantar Fasciitis can become a chronic condition, most patients experience significant relief with proper treatment and maintenance care. Stretching programs, orthotics, supportive footwear, and lifestyle modifications are often highly effective in preventing symptom recurrence.

Patients who require surgery typically experience substantial improvement in pain and mobility following recovery.

TREATMENT OPTIONS
Stretching Therapy

Daily stretching exercises help improve flexibility of the plantar fascia and calf muscles while reducing tension on the heel. Patients are often advised to stretch multiple times throughout the day for optimal symptom relief.

Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation

Physical therapy may be prescribed for approximately four to six weeks to improve flexibility, reduce inflammation, strengthen supporting muscles, and restore normal foot mechanics.

Night Splints & Supportive Devices

Splints may help maintain proper foot positioning while sleeping to reduce morning heel pain and prevent tightening of the plantar fascia overnight.

Minimally Invasive Surgery

For chronic Plantar Fasciitis that does not respond to conservative treatment, minimally invasive surgical procedures may be performed to release tension in the plantar fascia and relieve pain while minimizing downtime and recovery.

Treatment Duration & Recovery

Many patients begin experiencing improvement within several weeks of beginning conservative treatment. Physical therapy programs commonly last four to six weeks, while stretching and orthotic support may continue long term to prevent recurrence.

Recovery following minimally invasive surgery varies depending on the severity of the condition and the procedure performed, although recovery is generally faster and less painful than traditional open surgery techniques.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sometimes scar tissue builds up in a tendon and causes the tendon to lose its elasticity. At that point, chronic Achilles tendinitis can be treated by removing the scar tissue using a minimally invasive procedure like Tenex. This uses a wand that transmits ultrasonic energy to break through the scar tissue leaving healthy tissue behind. Downtime is minimal and return to normal activity is about a week.

Warm-up before and cool down after your workout routine. Slowly increase the intensity of your exercise over a period of time. If you’re using equipment at the gym, make sure you know how to use it safely and also with the form and posture. If unsure, always ask!

Grab a resistance band (or even a stretchy t-shirt)! Place the band or shirt around the ball of your foot. Pull the two ends of the band or shirt towards you until you feel a nice stretch in the back of your leg. Hold this stretch for 30 seconds, and relax for 10 seconds. Repeat this 5-10 times for both legs!

Achilles tendonitis rarely requires surgery. However, if treatment is delayed or neglected, there could be further damage such as a tendon tear. This would require surgical repair, and although we can do this with minimally invasive techniques, it is better to prevent damage when possible. Don’t ignore your pain. See your podiatrist as soon as possible.
