A ganglion cyst is a fluid-filled sac that commonly forms near a joint, tendon, or ligament in the foot or ankle. These cysts are noncancerous but can sometimes grow large enough to cause discomfort, pressure, tingling sensations, or difficulty wearing shoes comfortably.
Ganglion cysts may appear as soft or firm visible lumps beneath the skin and can vary in size over time. Depending on their location, they may interfere with joint movement, irritate nearby nerves, or weaken surrounding muscles. Although some cysts remain painless, others can significantly affect mobility and daily activities.
At our New York foot clinic, we perform a thorough evaluation to determine the size, location, and severity of the ganglion cyst as well as its impact on surrounding structures. Treatment plans are customized based on your symptoms, lifestyle, and overall foot function.
If the cyst is causing pain, discomfort, difficulty walking, or problems wearing shoes, treatment may include drainage procedures or surgical removal. Conservative treatment is often attempted first, but recurrent or painful cysts may require more advanced intervention.
Our goal is to relieve symptoms, reduce pressure, restore comfortable movement, and minimize the likelihood of recurrence.

Many patients experience significant relief from pain, discomfort, and mobility limitations following treatment. However, cysts treated with drainage alone may recur over time. Surgical removal generally offers a more permanent solution with lower recurrence rates.

With proper treatment and follow-up care, most patients are able to return to comfortable daily activities and improved foot function.
Some ganglion cysts that are painless or minimally bothersome may simply be monitored over time, especially if they are not affecting mobility or daily activities.
Depending on the size and symptoms, the cyst may be drained in the office using sterile techniques to remove the fluid and relieve pressure. While this procedure may reduce discomfort quickly, ganglion cysts can sometimes return after drainage.
Reducing irritation to the affected area through shoe modifications, activity adjustments, and protective padding may help minimize discomfort and pressure caused by the cyst.
If the cyst repeatedly returns, continues growing, or causes significant pain and mobility limitations, surgical removal may be recommended. Surgery focuses on removing the cyst and addressing the tissue connection responsible for recurrence.
Recovery depends on the type of treatment performed and the severity of the cyst. Patients undergoing simple aspiration procedures may return to normal activities relatively quickly, while surgical removal typically requires several weeks of healing.
Ganglion cyst surgery is usually performed in an outpatient setting, meaning patients are able to return home the same day. Most patients can gradually resume normal activities approximately four to six weeks after surgery, depending on healing progress and activity level.

Sometimes scar tissue builds up in a tendon and causes the tendon to lose its elasticity. At that point, chronic Achilles tendinitis can be treated by removing the scar tissue using a minimally invasive procedure like Tenex. This uses a wand that transmits ultrasonic energy to break through the scar tissue leaving healthy tissue behind. Downtime is minimal and return to normal activity is about a week.
Grab a resistance band (or even a stretchy t-shirt)! Place the band or shirt around the ball of your foot. Pull the two ends of the band or shirt towards you until you feel a nice stretch in the back of your leg. Hold this stretch for 30 seconds, and relax for 10 seconds. Repeat this 5-10 times for both legs!
Achilles tendonitis rarely requires surgery. However, if treatment is delayed or neglected, there could be further damage such as a tendon tear. This would require surgical repair, and although we can do this with minimally invasive techniques, it is better to prevent damage when possible. Don’t ignore your pain. See your podiatrist as soon as possible.
By accurately diagnosing, treating, and preventing lower leg, foot, and ankle conditions and ailments, we get you on your way back to healthy feet!Β We use conservative care and only activate surgeries when absolutely necessary.Β Here are some of the foot and ankle conditions we treat.
