What Is Gout?

Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the body. When uric acid levels become too high, sharp crystals can form within the joints, leading to sudden and extremely painful inflammation. Gout most commonly affects the big toe joint but can also involve other joints in the foot and ankle.

Gout attacks often develop suddenly and may cause intense pain, redness, swelling, warmth, and tenderness in the affected joint. In chronic cases, small lumps called tophi may form beneath the skin due to long-term uric acid buildup. Without proper management, repeated gout attacks can lead to permanent joint damage and reduced mobility.

Gout Treatment Options

At our New York foot clinic, treatment focuses on relieving pain during flare-ups, reducing inflammation, lowering uric acid levels, and helping prevent future attacks. Because gout is a chronic condition, long-term management is essential for maintaining joint health and comfort.

Treatment plans are personalized based on the severity of symptoms, frequency of attacks, medical history, and lifestyle factors. Early treatment is especially important because prompt management can significantly reduce the duration and intensity of gout flare-ups.

In addition to medication, dietary and lifestyle modifications may be recommended to help reduce uric acid buildup and lower the likelihood of recurring attacks.

Although gout is a chronic condition, proper treatment and dietary management can significantly reduce pain, inflammation, and the frequency of attacks. Early and consistent care can also help prevent long-term joint damage and improve overall quality of life.

With customized treatment plans and preventive care, many patients are able to maintain healthy joint function and continue normal daily activities comfortably.

TREATMENT OPTIONS
Anti-Inflammatory Medication & Pain Relief

NSAIDs, steroids, or other medications may be prescribed during a gout attack to reduce inflammation, swelling, and joint pain as quickly as possible.

Uric Acid Management Medications

Long-term medications may be recommended to help reduce uric acid production or improve the body’s ability to eliminate excess uric acid between flare-ups.

Dietary & Lifestyle Modifications

Patients may be advised to avoid foods and beverages known to increase uric acid levels, including red meat, asparagus, and alcohol. Maintaining proper hydration and a healthy lifestyle may also help reduce attacks.

Joint Monitoring & Long-Term Management

Because gout is a chronic condition, ongoing monitoring and preventive treatment are important to help protect the joints and minimize long-term damage.

Treatment Duration & Recovery

Most gout attacks last approximately three to ten days, although symptoms may improve more quickly with early treatment. Long-term management often involves ongoing medication use and lifestyle modifications to help reduce the frequency and severity of future attacks.

Patients who consistently follow their treatment plan are often able to successfully manage symptoms and prolong the time between flare-ups.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sometimes scar tissue builds up in a tendon and causes the tendon to lose its elasticity. At that point, chronic Achilles tendinitis can be treated by removing the scar tissue using a minimally invasive procedure like Tenex. This uses a wand that transmits ultrasonic energy to break through the scar tissue leaving healthy tissue behind. Downtime is minimal and return to normal activity is about a week.

Warm-up before and cool down after your workout routine. Slowly increase the intensity of your exercise over a period of time. If you’re using equipment at the gym, make sure you know how to use it safely and also with the form and posture. If unsure, always ask!
Β

Grab a resistance band (or even a stretchy t-shirt)! Place the band or shirt around the ball of your foot. Pull the two ends of the band or shirt towards you until you feel a nice stretch in the back of your leg. Hold this stretch for 30 seconds, and relax for 10 seconds. Repeat this 5-10 times for both legs!

Achilles tendonitis rarely requires surgery. However, if treatment is delayed or neglected, there could be further damage such as a tendon tear. This would require surgical repair, and although we can do this with minimally invasive techniques, it is better to prevent damage when possible. Don’t ignore your pain. See your podiatrist as soon as possible.
