What Is Metatarsalgia?

Metatarsalgia is a condition characterized by pain and inflammation in the ball of the foot, typically beneath the metatarsal bones. The discomfort is often caused by excessive pressure, poor foot mechanics, overuse, improper footwear, or abnormal weight distribution while walking or standing.

The condition may develop gradually or suddenly and can significantly interfere with daily activities, exercise, and mobility. Patients often describe the pain as sharp, aching, burning, or feeling as though they are walking on a pebble beneath the foot.

Metatarsalgia Treatment Options

At our New York foot clinic, we perform a detailed evaluation of your foot structure, gait, and pressure distribution to identify the underlying cause of your pain and create a personalized treatment plan.

Conservative treatment is highly effective for most patients and focuses on reducing inflammation, improving foot alignment, redistributing pressure, and supporting proper foot mechanics. Depending on the severity of the condition, treatment may include rest, ice therapy, anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy, footwear recommendations, and custom orthotics.

If conservative measures fail to provide adequate relief or structural abnormalities are contributing to the condition, surgical correction may be considered to address the underlying source of pain.

With appropriate treatment, most patients experience significant pain relief and are able to return to normal activities comfortably. Conservative care is often highly successful in reducing inflammation and correcting the underlying biomechanical issues contributing to the condition.

Patients who require surgery may experience long-term improvement in foot function, pressure distribution, and mobility following recovery and rehabilitation.

TREATMENT OPTIONS
Rest, Ice & Activity Modification

Reducing physical activity and applying ice can help decrease inflammation, relieve pain, and allow the irritated tissues in the ball of the foot to recover.

NSAIDs & Pain Management

Anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen may be recommended to reduce swelling and discomfort associated with metatarsalgia.

Supportive Footwear & Shoe Modifications

Wearing supportive shoes with proper cushioning and pressure distribution can significantly reduce stress on the ball of the foot and improve walking comfort.

Custom Orthotics

Custom molded orthotics help improve foot alignment, redistribute pressure, and correct biomechanical abnormalities that commonly contribute to metatarsalgia.

Treatment Duration & Recovery

Many patients experience improvement within weeks after beginning conservative treatment and modifying activities that place excessive pressure on the ball of the foot. Long-term symptom relief often depends on maintaining proper footwear and continued use of orthotics when recommended.

Recovery following surgery varies depending on the procedure performed and the severity of the condition. Physical therapy and gradual return to activity may also be recommended during the healing process.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sometimes scar tissue builds up in a tendon and causes the tendon to lose its elasticity. At that point, chronic Achilles tendinitis can be treated by removing the scar tissue using a minimally invasive procedure like Tenex. This uses a wand that transmits ultrasonic energy to break through the scar tissue leaving healthy tissue behind. Downtime is minimal and return to normal activity is about a week.

Warm-up before and cool down after your workout routine. Slowly increase the intensity of your exercise over a period of time. If you’re using equipment at the gym, make sure you know how to use it safely and also with the form and posture. If unsure, always ask!

Grab a resistance band (or even a stretchy t-shirt)! Place the band or shirt around the ball of your foot. Pull the two ends of the band or shirt towards you until you feel a nice stretch in the back of your leg. Hold this stretch for 30 seconds, and relax for 10 seconds. Repeat this 5-10 times for both legs!

Achilles tendonitis rarely requires surgery. However, if treatment is delayed or neglected, there could be further damage such as a tendon tear. This would require surgical repair, and although we can do this with minimally invasive techniques, it is better to prevent damage when possible. Don’t ignore your pain. See your podiatrist as soon as possible.
