A neuroma is a thickening or growth of nerve tissue that commonly develops between the toes, most often in the ball of the foot. This condition occurs when the nerve becomes irritated, inflamed, or compressed over time, leading to pain and abnormal nerve sensations.
Neuromas can make walking, standing, exercising, or wearing shoes uncomfortable and may progressively worsen if left untreated. Patients often describe the sensation as burning, tingling, numbness, or feeling as though they are standing on a pebble inside the shoe.
At our New York foot clinic, we use advanced diagnostic technology and minimally invasive procedures to provide fast and effective relief while minimizing downtime and recovery.
At our New York foot clinic, we carefully evaluate the severity and location of the neuroma to create a treatment plan tailored to your symptoms, lifestyle, and activity level. Conservative treatment often focuses on reducing inflammation and relieving pressure on the irritated nerve through anti-inflammatory medications, injections, footwear modifications, and orthotics.
If symptoms persist despite conservative care, minimally invasive or surgical treatment may be recommended. One of our most advanced treatment options involves minimally invasive cryotherapy, an in-office procedure that permanently destroys the painful nerve tissue without the need for general anesthesia or traditional open surgery.

With proper treatment, most patients experience significant relief from nerve pain, tingling, burning sensations, and walking discomfort. Minimally invasive procedures such as cryotherapy can provide long-term symptom relief while avoiding the downtime associated with traditional surgery.

Early diagnosis and treatment may also help prevent worsening nerve damage and chronic discomfort.
NSAIDs and other anti-inflammatory therapies may help reduce swelling around the nerve and relieve discomfort associated with the neuroma.
Injections may be used to reduce inflammation and irritation surrounding the nerve tissue, helping decrease pain and abnormal nerve sensations.
Orthotics and supportive footwear can help redistribute pressure away from the affected nerve and improve walking comfort while reducing irritation.
Cryotherapy is an advanced in-office procedure that uses targeted freezing technology to destroy the painful nerve tissue causing the neuroma. This minimally invasive treatment typically takes less than 30 minutes, requires no general anesthesia, and allows patients to walk immediately afterward with very little recovery time.
Many patients experience symptom improvement within days to weeks after conservative treatment begins. Recovery time depends on the type of treatment performed and the severity of the neuroma.
Patients undergoing cryotherapy are often able to return to normal footwear and resume regular daily activities within just a few days. Traditional surgery may require additional healing time and temporary activity modifications during recovery.

Sometimes scar tissue builds up in a tendon and causes the tendon to lose its elasticity. At that point, chronic Achilles tendinitis can be treated by removing the scar tissue using a minimally invasive procedure like Tenex. This uses a wand that transmits ultrasonic energy to break through the scar tissue leaving healthy tissue behind. Downtime is minimal and return to normal activity is about a week.
Grab a resistance band (or even a stretchy t-shirt)! Place the band or shirt around the ball of your foot. Pull the two ends of the band or shirt towards you until you feel a nice stretch in the back of your leg. Hold this stretch for 30 seconds, and relax for 10 seconds. Repeat this 5-10 times for both legs!
Achilles tendonitis rarely requires surgery. However, if treatment is delayed or neglected, there could be further damage such as a tendon tear. This would require surgical repair, and although we can do this with minimally invasive techniques, it is better to prevent damage when possible. Don’t ignore your pain. See your podiatrist as soon as possible.
