Turf Toe is a sprain of the big toe joint that occurs when the toe bends upward beyond its normal range of motion. This injury commonly affects athletes who participate in sports that involve running, jumping, or sudden directional changes on hard surfaces such as artificial turf.
The condition develops when the ligaments, tendons, and soft tissue structures surrounding the big toe joint become overstretched or torn. Depending on the severity of the injury, Turf Toe can range from mild inflammation to significant ligament damage that affects walking and athletic performance.
Without proper treatment, Turf Toe can lead to chronic pain, stiffness, reduced motion, and long-term joint instability.
At our New York foot clinic, we perform a detailed assessment of your symptoms, activity level, foot structure, and injury severity to create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your needs and lifestyle.
Treatment focuses on reducing inflammation, stabilizing the injured joint, restoring mobility, and preventing future injury. Conservative treatment is effective in most cases and may include rest, ice therapy, anti-inflammatory medications, splinting, and activity modification.
In severe cases involving significant ligament damage or joint instability, surgical intervention may be recommended to restore proper function and alignment of the big toe joint.

With early diagnosis and proper treatment, most patients experience significant pain relief and full restoration of foot function. Prompt care is important to help prevent chronic stiffness, instability, and long-term joint damage.

Most individuals are able to return to normal daily activities, exercise, and sports comfortably after recovery.
Reducing activity and using ice, compression, and elevation can help decrease swelling, pain, and inflammation during the early stages of healing.
Anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen may help reduce pain and swelling while the injured joint heals.
Splints, taping, or protective footwear may be used to stabilize the big toe joint and limit movement during recovery.
Rehabilitation exercises may help restore flexibility, strength, balance, and range of motion once pain and inflammation begin to improve.
Recovery time varies depending on the severity of the injury, although most patients improve within approximately four to six weeks with conservative treatment. More severe injuries may require longer rehabilitation periods or surgical recovery.
Athletes and highly active individuals may require gradual return-to-sport programs to safely resume activity while minimizing the risk of reinjury.

Sometimes scar tissue builds up in a tendon and causes the tendon to lose its elasticity. At that point, chronic Achilles tendinitis can be treated by removing the scar tissue using a minimally invasive procedure like Tenex. This uses a wand that transmits ultrasonic energy to break through the scar tissue leaving healthy tissue behind. Downtime is minimal and return to normal activity is about a week.
Grab a resistance band (or even a stretchy t-shirt)! Place the band or shirt around the ball of your foot. Pull the two ends of the band or shirt towards you until you feel a nice stretch in the back of your leg. Hold this stretch for 30 seconds, and relax for 10 seconds. Repeat this 5-10 times for both legs!
Achilles tendonitis rarely requires surgery. However, if treatment is delayed or neglected, there could be further damage such as a tendon tear. This would require surgical repair, and although we can do this with minimally invasive techniques, it is better to prevent damage when possible. Don’t ignore your pain. See your podiatrist as soon as possible.
