Tendons connect muscles to bones, while ligaments connect bones to each other and help stabilize joints throughout the foot and ankle. These structures are essential for movement, balance, and overall foot function.
Tendon and ligament injuries may occur due to overuse, sports injuries, falls, sudden twisting movements, improper footwear, or repetitive stress. Injuries can range from mild inflammation and sprains to partial or complete tears that significantly affect mobility and stability.
Without proper treatment, tendon and ligament injuries can lead to chronic pain, weakness, instability, difficulty walking, and long-term functional problems.
At our New York foot clinic, we use advanced diagnostic technology and comprehensive evaluations to determine the severity of your injury and identify the most effective treatment plan for your specific condition and lifestyle.
Treatment focuses on reducing inflammation, stabilizing the injured area, restoring mobility, and promoting proper healing. Conservative treatment is effective for many injuries and may include rest, ice therapy, braces, orthotics, physical therapy, and anti-inflammatory medications.
If symptoms persist or the injury is severe, surgical repair may be necessary to restore proper stability and function.

Early diagnosis and treatment are critical for preventing chronic pain, instability, and long-term dysfunction. Most patients experience substantial improvement with conservative treatment and rehabilitation.

Patients requiring surgery can often achieve excellent long-term outcomes with restored stability, improved mobility, and reduced pain following recovery.
Limiting physical activity and avoiding excessive stress on the injured tendon or ligament allows healing to begin while preventing additional damage.
Applying ice and using anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen may help reduce pain, inflammation, and swelling.
Supportive devices such as braces, casts, or walking boots may be prescribed to stabilize the injured area and protect the foot during healing.
Physical therapy helps restore strength, flexibility, balance, and mobility while reducing the risk of future injury.
Recovery time varies depending on the severity and location of the injury. Mild injuries may improve within several weeks, while more significant tears or surgical repairs may require extended periods of immobilization and rehabilitation.
Physical therapy is commonly incorporated during recovery to help patients safely regain strength, motion, and balance before returning to full activity.

Sometimes scar tissue builds up in a tendon and causes the tendon to lose its elasticity. At that point, chronic Achilles tendinitis can be treated by removing the scar tissue using a minimally invasive procedure like Tenex. This uses a wand that transmits ultrasonic energy to break through the scar tissue leaving healthy tissue behind. Downtime is minimal and return to normal activity is about a week.
Grab a resistance band (or even a stretchy t-shirt)! Place the band or shirt around the ball of your foot. Pull the two ends of the band or shirt towards you until you feel a nice stretch in the back of your leg. Hold this stretch for 30 seconds, and relax for 10 seconds. Repeat this 5-10 times for both legs!
Achilles tendonitis rarely requires surgery. However, if treatment is delayed or neglected, there could be further damage such as a tendon tear. This would require surgical repair, and although we can do this with minimally invasive techniques, it is better to prevent damage when possible. Don’t ignore your pain. See your podiatrist as soon as possible.
