What Is Achilles Tendonitis?

Tendons are the ends of muscles that attach to bones. Tendonitis means there is inflammation (or irritation) of the tendon. It can be caused by overuse, an injury, or due to an activity your body isn’t used to. The Achilles tendon is the tendon that at the back of the ankle and heel and is one of the most common tendons in the lower leg to become irritated.

Achilles Tendonitis Treatment Options

As soon as you notice pain, remember RICE: Rest, Ice, Compress, and Elevate. If pain hasn’t improved after 2–3 days, visit a podiatrist. Treatment may include heel lifts, bracing, physical therapy (4–6 weeks), and custom orthotics for long-term support. For athletes and active patients, PRP and Stem Cell injections can reduce pain and speed recovery. Tenex is a minimally invasive in-office procedure using ultrasonic waves to remove diseased tissue β€” no stitches required. If caught early, Achilles tendonitis can be managed effectively to prevent further tendon damage.

RICE METHODS
Rest

Stop the activity causing pain immediately. Avoid putting weight on the affected foot and ankle for 2–3 days to allow the initial inflammation to settle.

Ice

Apply an ice pack wrapped in a cloth to the back of your ankle for 15–20 minutes every 2–3 hours. Never apply ice directly to skin.

Compress

Wrap your ankle with a compression bandage to reduce swelling. Keep it snug but not too tight β€” loosen immediately if you feel numbness or tingling.

Elevate

Raise your foot above heart level as often as possible, especially when resting or sleeping. This drains excess fluid and reduces swelling faster.

Treatment Duration & Recovery

If the pain has not gotten better after 2-3 days, it is time to visit a podiatrist. Your doctor may place heel lifts inside of your sneakers to take away the tension on your Achilles tendon. Depending on the severity of the condition, you may be prescribed a brace or other device to help rest your foot/ankle and limit excess movement. You may also need physical therapy for 4-6 weeks to help with pain and swelling and to strengthen the tendon after it has healed. For more long-term support, custom orthotics (shoe inserts) can help prevent the problem from coming back.

For athletes, Broadway dancers, and anyone who needs to get back to doing what they love right away, PRP and/or Stem Cell injections will not only help with pain, but also to expedite the recovery process.Β  PRP and Stem Cell Therapy can also be used as stand alone therapies to treat chronic tendinopathy.

Tenex is a minimally invasive treatment option that can be done under light sedation in-office. This revolutionary procedure uses ultrasonic waves to break up the diseased tissue, scar tissue, and calcifications in the plantar fascia that is causing pain. With a local anesthetic in the heel, a small wand is inserted into the fascia and is guided ultrasonically to get remove the injured tissues while leaving the healthy tissues intact and increasing blood supply to the region to speed healing time. No stitches are necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sometimes scar tissue builds up in a tendon and causes the tendon to lose its elasticity. At that point, chronic Achilles tendinitis can be treated by removing the scar tissue using a minimally invasive procedure like Tenex. This uses a wand that transmits ultrasonic energy to break through the scar tissue leaving healthy tissue behind. Downtime is minimal and return to normal activity is about a week.

Warm-up before and cool down after your workout routine. Slowly increase the intensity of your exercise over a period of time. If you’re using equipment at the gym, make sure you know how to use it safely and also with the form and posture. If unsure, always ask!
Β

Grab a resistance band (or even a stretchy t-shirt)! Place the band or shirt around the ball of your foot. Pull the two ends of the band or shirt towards you until you feel a nice stretch in the back of your leg. Hold this stretch for 30 seconds, and relax for 10 seconds. Repeat this 5-10 times for both legs!

Achilles tendonitis rarely requires surgery. However, if treatment is delayed or neglected, there could be further damage such as a tendon tear. This would require surgical repair, and although we can do this with minimally invasive techniques, it is better to prevent damage when possible. Don’t ignore your pain. See your podiatrist as soon as possible.
