Dr.Artis was so amazing. After going to two other podiatrists who gave me no support or hope, Dr. artis made me feel like there can be change for me. She was so patient, kind and informative. I’m actually excited to go back and get my results.
One of the first questions patients ask when they discover a ganglion cyst on their foot is a completely reasonable one: why did this happen? Understanding what causes a ganglion cyst matters not just for curiosity’s sake but for treatment planning because a cyst that forms in response to repetitive mechanical stress at a specific joint requires a different long-term management approach than one arising from a prior injury or an underlying inflammatory arthritis. At Healthy Feet NYC, we believe that a complete explanation of your diagnosis is part of good medical care. We take the time to explain what a ganglion cyst is, why yours likely developed, and what steps beyond simply treating the cyst itself may reduce the chance of it recurring.
What causes a ganglion cyst is not fully understood at the cellular level, but the leading theory holds that repetitive microtrauma or mechanical stress at a joint capsule or tendon sheath causes a one-way valve defect to develop allowing synovial fluid to escape the joint or sheath under pressure and accumulate in the surrounding soft tissue, eventually forming a walled-off cystic structure. Contributing factors include prior joint injury or sprain (a single traumatic event can initiate the process), repetitive high-impact activity that stresses specific foot joints, joint hypermobility, osteoarthritis causing joint capsule weakening, and foot structural abnormalities such as flatfoot or high-arched cavus foot that place abnormal loads on specific joints. Ganglion cysts are more common in women than men and most frequently occur between the ages of 20 and 40, though they can develop at any age.

Understanding the cause of a ganglion cyst informs a more complete treatment approach that addresses not just the cyst itself but the mechanical environment in which it formed. For cysts arising from repetitive stress at a hypermobile or overloaded joint, custom foot orthotics designed to redistribute load away from the affected joint can meaningfully reduce the mechanical stimulus driving cyst formation and lower recurrence risk after treatment. For cysts associated with inflammatory arthritis rheumatoid arthritis or psoriatic arthritis can produce dorsal ganglion-like masses addressing the underlying inflammatory condition in partnership with a rheumatologist is an essential component of care. For activity-related cysts in runners, dancers, or athletes, biomechanical analysis and training load modification are incorporated into the treatment plan alongside cyst-specific interventions.
