Dr.Artis was so amazing. After going to two other podiatrists who gave me no support or hope, Dr. artis made me feel like there can be change for me. She was so patient, kind and informative. I’m actually excited to go back and get my results.
Tarsal tunnel syndrome and plantar fasciitis are the two most commonly confused causes of plantar heel pain — and the confusion is clinically understandable, as both produce medial heel pain that worsens with prolonged standing and walking. The critical distinguishing features are neurological in tarsal tunnel syndrome and mechanical in plantar fasciitis. Plantar fasciitis produces sharp, stabbing pain localized to the medial calcaneal tuberosity that is classically worst with the first steps in the morning, improves after several minutes of walking, and worsens again after prolonged activity — without any neurological symptoms such as burning, tingling, numbness, or electric sensations. Tarsal tunnel syndrome, by contrast, produces burning, tingling, or electric shock pain that radiates along the medial ankle and plantar foot following the posterior tibial nerve distribution — often worsening with prolonged standing, aggravated by ankle dorsiflexion, and frequently present at night or at rest when mechanical load is absent, distinguishing it clearly from the load-dependent pain of fasciitis. At Healthy Feet Podiatry, our NYC specialists use Tinel’s sign testing over the tarsal tunnel, diagnostic ultrasound of both the plantar fascia and posterior tibial nerve, and nerve conduction studies when neurological involvement is suspected to separate these diagnoses definitively — because treating fascial inflammation in a patient with nerve compression, or vice versa, produces no improvement and delays appropriate care by months.
At Healthy Feet Podiatry, plantar fasciitis is treated with plantar fascia-specific stretching, custom orthotics with medial arch support and heel cushioning, shockwave therapy (ESWT), and PRP injection for chronic cases — targeting the inflamed fibrous tissue rather than the nerve. Tarsal tunnel syndrome is treated with neural decompression strategies — orthotics designed to reduce tarsal tunnel volume by correcting hindfoot valgus, corticosteroid injection into the tunnel to reduce perineural swelling, posterior tibial nerve mobilization techniques, and surgical flexor retinaculum release when compression is confirmed and conservative measures have failed. When both conditions coexist — a clinically documented combination in patients with flatfoot deformity where arch collapse stretches the plantar fascia and simultaneously narrows the tarsal tunnel — we treat both pathologies in a coordinated, sequenced protocol, addressing each component based on clinical priority and patient symptom dominance.

Healthy Feet Podiatry’s NYC foot pain specialists have diagnosed and treated thousands of plantar heel pain cases — and our precision in differentiating tarsal tunnel syndrome from plantar fasciitis, and identifying combined presentations, is one of the primary reasons our patients achieve lasting pain relief rather than the revolving cycle of treatment attempts that follows misdiagnosis. On-site diagnostic ultrasound and clinical nerve testing at our Manhattan locations means you receive a tissue-level diagnosis at your first appointment. We serve patients across Manhattan and the five boroughs, accepting most major insurance plans for heel pain evaluation. If your heel pain includes burning, tingling, or nighttime symptoms that haven’t responded to plantar fasciitis treatment, one appointment at Healthy Feet Podiatry gives you the diagnostic clarity your recovery depends on.
