Dr.Artis was so amazing. After going to two other podiatrists who gave me no support or hope, Dr. artis made me feel like there can be change for me. She was so patient, kind and informative. I’m actually excited to go back and get my results.
Burning foot pain is one of the most diagnostically challenging presentations in podiatric medicine — it is a symptom shared by tarsal tunnel syndrome, peripheral neuropathy from diabetes or vitamin deficiency, complex regional pain syndrome, lumbar radiculopathy, Morton’s neuroma, plantar fasciitis with nerve irritation, and small fiber neuropathy — conditions with entirely different causes, treatments, and prognoses. Tarsal tunnel syndrome should be specifically considered when burning pain is localized to the medial ankle, heel, and plantar foot following the posterior tibial nerve distribution, worsens with prolonged standing and walking, is aggravated by ankle dorsiflexion-eversion positioning, and is associated with positive Tinel’s sign over the tarsal tunnel — a reproduction of burning or electric symptoms with percussion over the nerve posterior to the medial malleolus. The presence of nighttime burning pain and symptoms at rest distinguishes neurological causes from mechanical causes and raises the clinical priority of nerve evaluation. At Healthy Feet Podiatry, our NYC burning foot pain specialists perform a systematic diagnostic evaluation — including vascular assessment, neurological examination, Tinel’s testing, diagnostic ultrasound, and coordination of nerve conduction studies and blood work — to identify the specific cause of every patient’s burning foot symptoms rather than defaulting to a single diagnostic assumption.
At Healthy Feet Podiatry, the diagnostic workup for burning foot pain begins with a detailed symptom characterization — onset, location, radiation pattern, aggravating and relieving factors, relationship to activity and rest, and associated symptoms — that narrows the differential before any examination or imaging. Clinical nerve testing including Tinel’s sign, dorsiflexion-eversion stress test, and sensory mapping of the plantar surface is performed to evaluate posterior tibial nerve involvement specifically. Diagnostic ultrasound visualizes the posterior tibial nerve, tarsal tunnel contents, and medial plantar structures in real time — identifying nerve thickening, perineural fibrosis, or space-occupying lesions not detectable on clinical examination alone. When peripheral neuropathy is in the differential, we coordinate appropriate blood work — fasting glucose, HbA1c, B12, thyroid function, and inflammatory markers — to exclude systemic metabolic causes. When lumbar radiculopathy cannot be clinically excluded, we facilitate appropriate spine imaging referral. The goal is a specific, confirmed diagnosis — not a working assumption — because burning foot pain treated empirically without diagnostic confirmation consistently produces incomplete and temporary results.

Healthy Feet Podiatry’s NYC foot pain specialists have evaluated and diagnosed hundreds of burning foot pain cases across the full diagnostic spectrum — from tarsal tunnel syndrome and Morton’s neuroma to diabetic peripheral neuropathy and small fiber neuropathy — and our systematic diagnostic approach means patients leave their first appointment with a specific, confirmed diagnosis rather than a tentative working impression. We serve patients across Manhattan and the five boroughs, accepting most major insurance plans for peripheral nerve evaluation and foot pain consultation. Our Manhattan locations offer same-week appointments for new patients with burning foot symptoms. If burning feet have been limiting your life in NYC and you haven’t received a clear diagnosis, one appointment at Healthy Feet Podiatry is where the guesswork ends and the right treatment begins.
